Jermaine Wharton, 32, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree carjacking and weapons offenses, according to Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill.

On Monday at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where Wharton is in custody on an unrelated matter, he was charged with the above offenses.

On Nov. 13, 2021, at 9:19 a.m., Pleasantville police received a Shot Spotter alert and 911 call in reference to a shooting at 914 N. Main St., Shill said.

Police found Ivan Smith, 41, of Somers Point, laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound, Shill said. Medical personnel also responded to the scene and performed CPR, but they were unable to revive Smith. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is an active and cooperative investigation between the ACPO Major Crimes Unit, Pleasantville Police Department and Millville Police Department.
